Oneca: The Grape Variety Rescued from Extinction

By 30/01/2026No Comments

Bodegas Príncipe de Viana presents Príncipe de Viana Oneca, the first wine on the market made entirely from the Oneca variety, a white grape native to Navarra that remained unnoticed for decades until it was officially identified and registered as a new commercial variety in Spain in 2023.

With just 3,300 bottles produced, its arrival on the market marks the culmination of nearly two decades of research and the recovery of Spain’s viticultural heritage, embodied in a new white wine that reveals the fresh, balanced and aromatic character of this unique grape.

This renaissance has been made possible thanks to the “Cepas Singulares de Navarra – Vinos Old-Vidaos” programme led by EVENA, under whose auspices the study of this previously unknown vine began, confirming it to be an unidentified variety. Subsequent analyses verified its uniqueness from a genetic, morphological and productive standpoint, consolidating its relevance as a singular variety within Navarra’s viticultural heritage.
